How Do You Prevent Stains While Wearing Braces?

Getting braces with Dietrich Orthodontics is a fantastic way to straighten your teeth and improve your smile, but they also bring some challenges, like the potential for stains and teeth discoloration. Keeping your teeth bright and clean can be tricky with brackets and wires in the way. Luckily, there are simple strategies to help you maintain a sparkling smile.

How Do Braces Cause Stains?

Braces don’t actually cause stains. Our clear and metal Damon™ braces are made up of stain-resistant brackets and wires, neither of which cause stains by design. However, the brackets and wires create tiny spaces that can easily trap food particles and plaque. If you don’t properly maintain your braces, you could get a build of particles that can cause stains or white spots on teeth.

Fortunately, you can prevent or minimize teeth discoloration by incorporating the following simple guidelines in your lifestyle throughout treatment.

Daily Oral Hygiene Routine

Cleaning your braces thoroughly every day is one of the most effective ways to avoid teeth discoloration. Plaque and bacteria on the teeth and gum line have one purpose—to eat away at the tooth and cause gum disease. Over time, this can cause decalcification, also known as demineralization, which leaves the teeth in various colors and makes them more vulnerable to threats like cavities.

Here are some tips to level up your oral hygiene routine:

  • Brush Often: You should whip out your toothbrush every morning and evening, as well as after every meal and snack in between! Make sure you’re using fluoride toothpaste to help keep your enamel strong and fight off cavities.
  • Use A Good Toothbrush: Many ask us what toothbrush we recommend and our answer is simple: the toothbrush you’ll use! If you prefer a manual toothbrush, that’s great! They work wonderfully.  A manual toothbrush used correctly and at the proper intervals will work just as well.
  • Floss, Floss, Floss: Flossing can be a bit of a hassle with braces, but it’s crucial to prevent teeth discoloration. Floss threaders and interdental brushes are your best friends here, making it easier to get between your teeth. A water flosser is also a fantastic tool for blasting away food particles and plaque from hard-to-reach spots. (Note: In most cases, interdental brushes and water flossers should be used in addition to traditional floss. They are not a replacement.)
  • Mouthwash: A good mouthwash can be a great way to top off your oral hygiene routine. Not only does it keep your breath smelling and tasting fresh for longer, but it also provides added protection against plaque and bacteria.

Bonus Tip: If you use any teeth whitening products or services, you’re going to have to put them on hold for now. When you have braces, the whitening ingredients will only be able to reach some of the teeth’s surface. They’ll look great while you have the braces on, but once they inevitably come off, you will have teeth discoloration!

Food & Drinks To Avoid

Some food and drink might not leave particles in the braces, but they can stain the teeth! It’s kind of like spilling red wine on a rug. You can wipe and wash the food away, but there will still be some staining on the shirt.

These are examples of foods and drinks that are notorious for causing teeth discoloration and should be avoided or consumed in moderation.

  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Red Wine
  • Soda
  • Berries
  • Tomatoes & Tomato-Based Products
  • Soy Sauce
  • Balsamic Vinegar
  • Energy & Sport Drinks
  • Mustard

Regular Dental Visits

Just because you have Dr. Dietrich in your corner now does not mean you get to break up with your dentist! Your dentist is essential to your orthodontic journey, especially when preventing white stains on your teeth and other types of teeth discoloration.

Regular dental visits are essential for keeping your teeth clean and healthy, which is crucial for a smooth orthodontic experience and a beautiful smile at the end of treatment. Your dentist and their hygienist team will perform professional cleanings to remove plaque buildup that you might miss during your daily routine.

Your cleanings and dental check-ups are a chance for you to get personalized advice regarding your routine. If you have any concerns about your teeth and gums, your dentist is the person who can help. They are likely to spot issues before you do, so you should always go to your appointments even if you think everything is fine.

With your dentist’s help, you’ll have a reduced risk of white spots on your teeth while wearing braces, staining, decalcification, and oral health problems and increased chances of a happy and healthy smile!

Habits To Adapt

Adopting healthy habits while wearing braces is essential for avoiding teeth discoloration and maintaining a bright smile. First and foremost, quitting smoking is crucial. Tobacco products can cause significant staining and other serious oral health issues. Kicking the habit will not only improve your overall health but also keep your teeth looking their best.

Another important healthy lifestyle choice is drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Water helps wash away food particles and reduces plaque buildup, which can lead to stains. Make it a point to rinse your mouth with water after eating or drinking anything that’s not water.
