Summer Travel Guide for Orthodontic Treatment

Summer is the perfect time for new adventures and long-awaited vacations. Whether you’re jet-setting to a tropical paradise or hitting the road for a family road trip, at Dietrich Orthodontics, we believe nothing should hold back your excitement—not even your braces or Spark™ clear aligners! That’s why we’ve put together this “Summer Travel Guide for Orthodontic Treatment,” filled with tips and advice to keep your orthodontic appliances in great shape and your treatment on track while you enjoy your summer escapades.

What You Should Carry With You Everywhere

Your vacation is not a break from caring for your orthodontic appliances, so don’t forget to pack your braces care kit (or clear aligner kit)! You probably already carry most of the items mentioned below around with you daily anyway, so going on an extended trip without them would probably feel weirder than having them.

Orthodontic wax

Orthodontic wax is an incredibly essential part of any braces kit. If your brackets, wires, or aligners are poking, pinching, or rubbing against your cheek or gums, you can apply a small amount of orthodontic wax to prevent further irritation. The last thing you want on vacation is to develop uncomfortable mouth sores or open wounds or be constantly annoyed by your orthodontic appliance.

Another benefit of orthodontic wax is that in cases of emergency, like a loose braces bracket or damaged wire, orthodontic wax can hold your fixed braces together until you can return to Dietrich Orthodontics for repairs.

Over-the-counter pain killers

If you got your braces adjusted right before you left, or you know you’re going to be transitioning to a new aligner while you’re gone, you should consider taking some over-the-counter pain relievers in your braces kit. When taken correctly, they can help manage any potential discomfort or inflammation caused by your orthodontic appliances. Please take any over the counter medicine in accordance with the packaging directions or your physician.

Small mirror

You’re probably going to take many pictures on your vacation for Instagram, Facebook, or a photo album. You aren’t going to want any food in your teeth, braces, or aligners, and having a small mirror handy throughout your trip will ensure your smile and orthodontic appliances are photo-ready!

Reusable water bottle

No matter where you go for vacation this summer, you will want to stay hydrated, so a reusable water bottle is a significant part of your braces kit. Drinking water will keep your skin clear and your body able to follow through with the planned itinerary.

It will also prevent dry mouth—an uncomfortable condition that can make wearing orthodontic appliances unbearable or inconvenient—by keeping your mouth moist. Plus, the water will keep your metal braces, clear braces, and Spark™ aligners clean and fresh by rinsing away food and bacteria that can make your aligners and breath smell bad and your smile appear subpar.

What You Should Bring

Your portable braces kit isn’t the only thing you’ll need to guarantee the excellent condition of your orthodontic appliances this summer.

Floss & floss threaders

Regular flossing is vital for oral health, especially with fixed braces and aligners, as it removes debris and plaque that a toothbrush might miss. Pack enough floss to last your entire trip, as finding the right type might be tricky on vacation. You might want to pack some floss threaders because they make flossing effortless and fast—reducing the time you spend in front of the mirror and increasing your relaxation or adventure time.

Orajel

Let’s say the worst-case scenario happens—your orthodontic appliances irritate you or become damaged. You can apply Orajel to temporarily numb the area so it doesn’t ruin your day. However, unlike orthodontic wax, this will not stop the situation from worsening, so keep a close eye on the area.

Travel-Size Water Flosser

Water flossers maintain squeaky-clean teeth, gums, and fixed braces. But don’t try to fit a huge counter-sized water flosser in your bag! A travel-sized water flosser is much smaller, allowing you to continue your whole oral hygiene routine while you’re away from home and have the space to bring back all the souvenirs your heart desires.

Extras For Spark Clear Aligners

If you have Spark™ Clear Aligners, you need to make sure you pack the following:

Protective carrying case

Don’t forget to pack the protective case for your clear aligners! Unlike fixed braces, your Spark™ aligners are removable for eating, drinking, and oral hygiene. That means your removable orthodontic appliances are always at risk of being lost or damaged to the point of being unwearable. As the name suggests, the protective case will protect your aligners from various threats, like germs and being left behind or stepped on.

Additional aligners

Let’s say something happened to your aligners, and they’re completely unusable. What should you do?

You should wear your spare set of aligners—AKA, your previous pair. You don’t want to go without wearing aligners for the remainder of your summer vacation because your teeth will begin to shift and prolong your overall treatment! Keep your extras safe at your vacation headquarters, and wear them if needed. When you return home, Dr. Dietrich can get you replacement aligners.

Aligner toothbrush & cleaning solution

When packing your toiletries, pack a second toothbrush with soft bristles to brush your aligners. Also, pack whatever cleaning solution you use to disinfect your trays. You want your aligners to remain transparent, fresh-smelling, and fresh-tasting for your entire summer getaway!

Extra Elastics For Braces

Those tiny rubber bands play a huge role in your journey to a perfect smile! Packing extra elastics for your metal or clear braces is like packing extra peace of mind. You don’t want to risk running out prematurely, and you never know when one might snap or go missing. They’re super lightweight and barely take up any space, so you can easily toss a few extra packs into your braces kit. Plus, keeping up with your regular elastic changes, as recommended by Dr. Dietrich, is necessary, even when you’re miles away from home.
